Generations has provided the Meals on Wheels program for the 8 municipalities of the Indian Valley for over 40 years. Recently, the 7 municipalities of the North Penn area were added to the Generations service area so that our volunteers deliver to homebound clients in communities from Horsham to Worcester to Upper Salford to Telford. Our program delivers 2 meals each day to 160 clients and serves these community members through the volunteer efforts of nearly 250 volunteers. All of the food is made at Generations by our staff and volunteers.
Meals on Wheels is often the key ingredient in an older adult’s plan to remain in their home. The nutritional support provided to our clients, along with a daily visit from a friendly volunteer, provides support that helps to preserve the independence of our homebound clients. Those on our client list make whatever contribution they can to the cost of their meals, but like our noontime meal at the Center, no senior is denied service for inability to pay, and many of our clients are served at no cost.
Meals on Wheels programs have a huge social and economic impact across the country. In fact, one year of Meals on Wheels is roughly the same cost as just one day in a hospital or six days in a long-term care facility. With more than 10,000 Americans turning 65 every day, the need for programs like Meals on Wheels is always growing.
